the third pillar of Islam To purify. To grow. To foster. This is the meaning of zakat, a mandatory tax on all but the poorest Muslims. Muslims are taught that giving 2.5% of their wealth can earn God’s blessings. It purifies them and adds to their righteousness. They are taught that by practicing zakat and the other four pillars of Islam they can do enough good to outweigh their bad deeds and earn God’s favor. And this is why our hearts grieve!
